Mental Health Matters
Feeling stressed out?
Disappointment hovering like a cloud?
Not having any fun?
If Yes is your answer, then you are not alone.
We have all been through it and we have all surfaced as victors! With the all so fast and hectic lifestyle we live in nowadays, it’s next to impossible to experience perfect physical let alone mental health or well-being.
But, WHAT EXACTLY IS MENTAL HEALTH?
Mental Health is a healthy and happy state of mind where one can cope with his/her daily life struggle and still go to sleep every night with a smile on their face, he/she recognizes their abilities and works productively to contribute towards his/her community.
Ok, so that is mental health but why should You care?
Because mental health and well- being can greatly affect many areas of your life. Be it-
· Work, school, or home
· Physical health
· Ability to think clearly and make decisions
· Your relationship with others
· Or overall life satisfaction
Mental health is as significant and as important as our mental well-being
So, how do I maintain good mental health?
Just as you may work to keep your body healthy, you can also work to keep your
mind healthy by keeping in mind the three pillars of good health:
· Good (undisturbed) Sleep (7-8 hours per night)
· A balanced diet
· A good amount of Physical movement regularly (minimizing sitting time and increasing the movent of the body)
People should also remember that mental health is NOT the same as the absence of mental illness. Mental health includes emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It can influence:
· How you feel about yourself, the world, and your life.
· Your ability to solve problems and overcome challenges.
· Your ability to build relationships with other people.
· Your abilities to achieve and accomplish your goals
There are 4 basic dimensions of mental health and well-being
THOUGHTS
· Positive: I am a good person even though I have some flaws.
· Negative: My flaws are too big to overcome.
BEHAVIOR
· Positive: I reward myself for my accomplishments.
· Negative: I pond my fist when I am angry.
BODY REACTIONS
· Positive: I feel relaxed and calm.
· Negative: My heart is racing.
EMOTIONS
· Positive: I feel happy.
· Negative: I feel frustrated and annoyed.
Why should mental health matter to you and your family?
Life is about appreciating little things in what we have NOW and when we suffer, be it mentally or physically, even the slightest spark of joy can turn into a wildfire of negativity and suffering.
This can make it even harder to enjoy a balanced and rewarding life. Everyone can benefit from learning how to enhance and protect their mental health—whether or not they've experienced mental illness or not.
So, It becomes very important for all of us to agree with the American actress,
Glenn Close, when she said-
“What mental health needs are more sunlight, more
candor, and more unashamed conversation.”
